How much does a trip to Iceland cost?

French version

The answer: very expensive. I’ve decided to share with you the breakdown of the costs of our 13-day Road Trip. That said, it’s important to keep in mind:

  • The amounts below are for two people;
  • We were in high season;
  • We had chosen a hotel and AirBnB type of travel;
  • We had chosen to book a small SUV; and
  • Gasoline in Iceland is close to $3CDN/liter.

Flight, accommodation and transportation alone accounted for 79% of the budget. So, excluding gas, we had spent around $9,000 before we even left Canada.

Gas represented an expense of $973 for 3,000 km of driving, or 8% of the budget. We had clearly underestimated gas, but it goes fast at $3 a liter. We could have saved even more by using the car’s electric motor, but we were only told about gas.

Food includes the few restaurants we went to and groceries. Our suppers in our accommodations were mainly pasta and we ate grocery store sandwiches.

Activities account for 14% of the budget, but there’s a lot of « while you’re at it ». Let’s just say that Iceland is inspiring when it comes to activities.

It was our 10th anniversary trip and we knew it was a big luxury, but it was worth every penny.
